Tuckpointing a Chimney

When proceeding with chimney tuckpointing, the first step is preparation. During this step, we erect scaffolding, swing stages, and/or ladders as required, the best-suited option is determined on-site. Upon, completion of setup, we cover the worksite with tarps during and protect with tarps as necessary. When tuckpointing cracked, missing, and/or loose mortar joints located during chimney tuckpointing there is a thorough inspection completed.

Chimney Tuckpointing Process

After a detailed visual inspection, all loose and cracked mortar joints are cut or raked as required ¾” deep or to solid bed joint with special power routing tools designed to remove the mortar without unduly damaging the edges of the abutting masonry. The grinding operation is completed with the use of commercial dust control vacuums to ensure minimal cleanup and safer air. During the routing operation, each masonry unit, brick or stone, shall be inspected and tested to find those which may be loose.

Any masonry units found loose are reset in a full bed of mortar. After cleaning and flushing with water or compressed air, joints which have been cut out are filled with special tuckpointing mortar, of type N. A new mortar of type N is packed tightly into the joints to match the existing mortar in comprehensive strength, color and joint style as close as possible. All existing mortar joints are lightly dampened before tuckpointing to ensure proper bound of the new mortar. All tuck-pointed masonry will be brushed and cleaned to remove all excess mortar and mortar smears. The new mortar joints are almost impervious to water.
