Caulking, the American way to fix everything! All jokes aside, if done in a clean and proper way, chimney caulking specific parts can play a vital role in extending the life of your chimney. There are a few places that chimney caulking is effective and appropriate. The most vital place is the chimney counter flashing that is present to create a uniform rain deflecting skirt where the roof meets the chimney. Additionally, caulking can be used as a fix on a chimney crown, IF the existing chimney crown cracks are at a manageable size. Sometimes it is better to replace the entire chimney crown itself if the condition is bad enough, or if you are looking for a longer term fix.

Chimney Caulking Process
All cracked or missing chimney caulking located on the its elevations are inspected and tested for strength or even existence and cut out with sharp blades and/or replaced with new caulking. The existing backed system is first inspected and if necessary, replaced with new a new backing system so the chimney caulking is held firm. Basically, a flexible foundation is created for the chimney caulking. Additionally, all caulking joints, before application, are thoroughly cleaned, dried, and freed from dust, oil, grease, or any other foreign matter. This is done to ensure the chimney caulking bond to work from point A to point B without any interference that could lead to a weaker bond.

The color of the new sealant is matched on a color matching template used to match the existing color as close as possible. The new caulking material, NP1, a one-part urethane sealant, is placed with 80-pound pressure guns and finished to a smooth neat appearing surface using heated jointing tools. All caulking is tooled immediately after application to ensure its firmness. There is full contact with the inner faces of the joint. Excess material is struck off with a tooling stick or knife.
