Lintel Replacement

Rusted lintel replacement is so important. The earlier this fix is pursued, the less chance of masonry damage and any potential water intrusion issues in the building. How can you tell if your lintel is rusting and get ahead of the curve? Rusting lintels will create cracking at masonry corners, begin to flake, and potentially start to discolor the surrounding masonry.

Lintel Masonry Removal

At the head of the masonry openings (windows, garages, and doors) we cut out the masonry as required directly above the lintels. The lintel replacement will reach out a little past each side of the opening, so masonry is removed until full access is available. Upon the removal of masonry units, we carefully clean the existing mortar from the existing bricks and sweep out all dust and debris. New bricks will only be necessary if existing bricks are cracked or heavily damaged.

Lintel Preparation and Installation

Now to the preparation and installation of the lintel replacement. The existing masonry above the openings will be braced as required with structural lumber. We remove lintels or cut plates at I beams as required. The replacement is partnered with newly painted steel lintels. We install a new self-adhering flashing with a metal termination bar at the top of the flashing and end dams at the ends of the masonry openings including weep cords in joint heads 24 inches of center. Finally, we clean and reset the masonry at the openings back to its original sound and plumb conditions. The new mortar will match the existing as close as possible.
