What is Masonry?

coast to coast masonry - what is masonry

Masonry is a skilled trade in the construction or restoration of masonry units (brick, stone, glass block, concrete blocks, etc). At Coast to Coast Masonry, we see it a step further. So really – what is masonry? We believe masonry work is art.  It is an art and skill that requires patience throughout the labor of the work, an observant eye to select the proper materials for the task, and the persistence to finish a job with the same drive and focus that you started the job with. But back to simpler terms, as masonry can be used to describe a skilled construction trade as well as the material used in the trade. Below we will highlight what is masonry in terms of the trade.

What is Masonry?

Masonry Explained… Part 1

Masonry itself as a trade has many tasks within a certain job that do require experience. Let us imagine that we are rebuilding a brick wall. First, when deciding to pick brick, we do consider many things, like brick base and face color, sizing, and even the different density of different bricks. In the cold winter, a very dense brick may not bond well to the mortar as it does not absorb any of the mortar mix easily. Past this step and onto the field, understanding the different mortar mixes and texture and color outcomes is very crucial. This is even more important when doing a restoration project and looking to match the new mortar to the existing.

A mortar mix typically is part sand and part masonry cement. Sand can determine the final texture, so it is important to select the proper sand. These are often split into soft and sharp, where soft sand will be a smooth finish and sharp sand will have a course texture upon completion. Finally, the bricklayer comes into the picture. Often a bricklayer is at the same task for up to 8 or 9 hours in a day. Aside from the mental toughness of doing a routine like this, the brick layer needs to be precise in distancing, stacking, pattern persistence, and more. Often a bricklayer uses preparation tools to stay in line and organized.
