Some houses are built and dressed in siding panels or other decorative finishes, asides from the classic brick or stone look. Most houses are built with chimneys. There comes an aging and unpleasant look to siding panels overtime and you may be intrigued to adding a masonry finish to the house. One common starting place is converting your chimney siding with chimney veneer brick, also known as, thin brick. Going with chimney veneer brick as opposed to a full size brick is more cost effective and maintains the look you are shooting for. So how is it done?
Chimney Veneer Brick
Chimney Structure Preparation
The existing siding panel or other chimney finish is removed and replaced with new plywood and/or cement boards, as necessary. Often times the existing base is still in good condition and is workable. Upon installation of these bases, felt paper #15 is installed over the plywood first. Additionally, masonry wire mesh is drilled, stapled, or nailed in and a new self-adhering flashing installed at the base of the chimney walls and around all openings. Upon mesh installation, we apply a scratch coat of cement for proper adhesion with the chimney veneer brick.

Chimney Veneer Brick Application
After/during proper curing time of the cement we install the new chimney veneer brick. Upon completion of the chimney veneer brick installation we tuck-point the walls 100% with mortar of type N. Mortar style finishes include concave (most common), flush (flat), or convex. Finally all maintenance joints, meaning, where chimney veneer brick meets roof, flashing, or concrete chimney crown, is properly caulked with one part urethane sealant, NP1.
