3, Chimney Liner System The liner system includes the firebox, smoke chamber, and liner. A firebox will often need tuckpointing and possibly the replacement of cracked firebrick to properly keep heat where it should be! The second part is the smoke chamber. Smoke chambers often are not smooth and need to be parged. This prevents build up of creosote and helps funnel smoke better to the liner. Finally, the chimney liner needs to be maintained and cleaned. If too much creosote builds up in a liner, it can cause a large array of issues from draft issues, to house odor, to chimney fires, etc. This is a costly fix if not maintained.

4, Chimney Creosote As mentioned above, creosote can cause a lot of chimney problems. Regarding draft issues, a liner is sized very accordingly to the size of your firebox. If enough creosote buildup develops, it can limit the draft causing smoke to draft backwards into the house. With creosote buildup, if there is ever negative pressure even with no fire, the odor of the creosote can leak into the house. Other potential issues can arise too. 5, Chimney Brick & Mortar Common brick & mortar issues include cracked or spalling bricks, and cracked or sanding mortar. Brick and mortar issues are rarely a doing of their own. On a chimney, leaking gases in a liner, creosote, or poor chimney crowns usually lead to premature deterioration.
